Background of the Study

Maternal mortality remains a major public health challenge in Nigeria, and Kaduna State is no exception. Despite ongoing efforts to improve maternal health, maternal mortality rates remain high, primarily due to complications during childbirth, such as hemorrhage, sepsis, and hypertensive disorders (Aliyu et al., 2023). Nurse-led interventions, however, have proven to be effective in reducing maternal mortality by providing comprehensive care, early detection of complications, timely referrals, and health education.

In Kaduna State, nurse-led interventions, including antenatal care, community outreach programs, and training in emergency obstetric care, have been introduced as strategies to address maternal mortality. Nurse practitioners and midwives are often at the frontline of these interventions, educating women on the importance of skilled birth attendance, proper nutrition, and early detection of pregnancy-related complications (Ibrahim et al., 2024). Moreover, nurses in rural areas are often key players in providing access to healthcare services for women who might otherwise have limited access.

Despite these efforts, the impact of nurse-led interventions on reducing maternal mortality in Kaduna State has not been systematically evaluated. This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in reducing maternal mortality rates, specifically examining how nurse-led programs contribute to improving maternal health outcomes in the state.

Statement of the Problem

Maternal mortality rates in Kaduna State remain high, with many preventable deaths occurring due to lack of access to skilled healthcare providers, inadequate antenatal care, and delayed medical interventions. Nurse-led interventions have the potential to reduce maternal mortality but are not well-documented or evaluated in the context of Kaduna State. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in reducing maternal mortality rates in Kaduna State.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in reducing maternal mortality rates in Kaduna State.

2. To assess the impact of nurse-led interventions on maternal health outcomes, including antenatal care utilization, birth outcomes, and postpartum care.

3. To identify the barriers and challenges to the successful implementation of nurse-led interventions in reducing maternal mortality in Kaduna State.

Research Questions

1. How effective are nurse-led interventions in reducing maternal mortality rates in Kaduna State?

2. What impact do nurse-led interventions have on maternal health outcomes, such as antenatal care and birth outcomes, in Kaduna State?

3. What challenges do nurses face in implementing interventions to reduce maternal mortality in Kaduna State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Nurse-led interventions significantly reduce maternal mortality rates in Kaduna State.

2. Nurse-led interventions improve maternal health outcomes, including antenatal care utilization and the reduction of pregnancy-related complications.

3. Barriers such as inadequate training, lack of resources, and cultural factors hinder the effectiveness of nurse-led interventions in reducing maternal mortality in Kaduna State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurse-led interventions aimed at reducing maternal mortality in Kaduna State, examining both the effectiveness of these interventions and the challenges faced by healthcare workers. Limitations may include difficulties in measuring long-term outcomes, variations in the quality of nurse-led interventions, and challenges in gathering data from remote areas.

Definitions of Terms

• Nurse-Led Interventions: Healthcare interventions designed and delivered primarily by nurses, including antenatal care, health education, and emergency obstetric care.

• Maternal Mortality Rate: The number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, typically caused by complications during pregnancy or childbirth.

• Antenatal Care: The care provided to women during pregnancy, aimed at preventing and managing pregnancy-related complications.
